Reactions

 

Know how to determine the major products of the reactions covered, including stereochemistry from syn and anti additions to cyclic or acyclic alkenes.

 

Know how to prepare alkynes.

Understand ozonolysis in analysis and preparations.

Know how to do syn and anti addition of hydrogen to alkynes.

Know the stereochemistry of the reactions studied and be able to relate this to optical activity of products.

Know stereochemical relationships of stereoisomers.

 

Be aware of when and how rearrangements can occur.

 

Be able to follow a sequence of reactions, providing the products in each step.

 

Know conditions leading to Saytsev and Hoffman orientation in elimination reactions.

 

Mechanisms

 

Be able to write out the mechanisms for electrophilic addition to  multiple bonds and E1 and E2 eliminations.

 

Nomenclature

 

Be able to understand the nomenclature of the compounds studied.

 

Spectroscopy

 

Be able to deduce structures from given NMR, IR, and MS data.

 

Know about fragmentation patterns in MS.

 

Be able to recognize different NMR environments in molecules.

Understand spin-spin coupling and how to interpret this in a spectrum.
