Notes for Chapter 7

 

    In this chapter we study the structure and preparation of unsaturated hydrocarbons.  There are many similarities in the chemistry of alkenes and alkynes as well as some significant differences.

    The relative stability of alkenes with the same carbon skeleton but the double bond in different positions is discussed.  You should be familiar with this because it will determine which alkene is most likely to be formed in a specific reaction.

    The mechanisms of dehydrohalogenation and dehydration are important and should be understood thoroughly.
