Introduction to statistics

Domino’s pizza use statistics to determine what they can sell

One question was could they sell deep dish pizza

They polled to determine that 45% preferred thick crust

Then professional sampled various recipes

And rated them in various categories

The various test pizza are baked and given to be tasted and rated

The rating are made under appropriate conditions

Polling is a constant process to determine their effectiveness

Lightening, a random act of nature

Technology can can determine where and when it strikes

The data on large number (a million) of strikes was collect

A histogram indicating the time of the first flash was created

The number of days it flashed at a given time was recorded

The distribution of flashed has a maximum around then a sharp decrease in a symmetric manner

This distribution with its fast fall off is close to normal distributions

The distribution for the time of the maximum number of flashes is also close to normal

There are outliers, days where the maximum number occurs at night

The mountainous region is deemed responsible for this pattern

The data for 1970 draft looks this, random right

The ball were placed in a container and drawn randomly

Well, if a monthly average is done, there is a down ward trend

Which is more obvious here. The officers were reassign

Statistician were called in and the numbers thoroughly mixed

The 1971 draft has variations, but does not have a trend

Another method of analysis

The problem is to determine the smallest sum of residue squared

By moving the line(change a & b)

To obtain the best fit
