Slide 13 of 35
Notes:
The number of motor boat registrations in Florida will be used as an example, and this number will be compared to a possible response, the number of manatee death recorded in the same year. A distance proportional to the number of motor boat registration will be determined along the x-axis, and a distance proportional to the number of manatee deaths will be determined along the y-axis. A point will be placed on the graph at both these distances from the origin.
An equal distance along each axis will be marked and labeled in order to facilitate the measurement of distance. If it is a linear plot each point will be an equal distance and a label defining the point can be placed. It should be noted that this label will not indicate distance. It will only be a label. In the case of motor boat registration only a scatter plot will truly represent the data. The number of motor boat registration do not increase is some constant manner.
