In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficient, the Most Merciful

Assalam-o-Alaikum, and welcome to my homepage on Shia'ism. My name is Syed Atif Abbas Zaidi. For those of you who are familiar with our naming conventions may know how our names are structured, but let me elaborate a little bit for those who don't. It is true that most Syeds are Shia's, however, there is a minority of those too who are not. A person who is a Syed, meaning that his father is a Syed too and no one in his ancestors had just taken up the name himself, is a direct decendant of the holy prophet (p.b.u.h). If both parents of a person are Syeds and so has been the case with every person in his lineage as far back as the holy prophet (p.b.u.h) himself, then such a person is called a "Najeeb-ut-Tarfain", a true Syed who's lineage has never seen a non-Syed. The last part of the name signifies where his chain meets the holy prophet's (p.b.u.h) lineage in his family. By these tokens I, too, am a direct decendant of the holy prophet (p.b.u.h), a Najeeb-ut-Tarfain. My last name signifies that my chain branched off from the brother (Hazrat Zaid) of the fifth Imam (Hazrat Baqar (as.)), hence the word Zaidi (belonging to Zaid). Quite a few people have asked me if I take pride in this heritage. Yes, I do and more than I can express, for which I shall till eternity remain indebted to Almighty. This, however, does not mean that I consider myself an authority on the Shia school of thought in the Islamic religion. But I do like to believe that I know of a few more events and happenings than someone who has not been a part of the family for there is knowledge that trickles down from generation to generation and is preserved in our books as well. The rest of my two names Atif and Abbas mean that "I have devotion towards" ("ruju karnay wala") for a very prominent figure in our history, Hazrat Abbas (as.), and for whom I really do carry a special place in my heart. Please follow the links ahead for more information on the Shia school of thought.
