Course Objectives:

The overall objective of the course is to introduce physical, chemical, and biological processes in water and wastewater treatment.  The first part of the course introduces the basic physical, chemical, and biological mechanisms.  The second half of the course applies these mechanisms to specific processes in water and wastewater treatment with an emphasis on problem interpretation, formulation, and solution. Although the focus of this course is on processes in water and wastewater treatment, source water and its quality are critical in effectively designing and operating these plants and providing potable water. To address this imbalance, you are to write a short paper (approximately 10 typed pages double spaced) discussing one or more aspects on this subject. Potential topics include 1. nonpoint versus point sources and their impacts, 2. natural versus reconstructed wetlands, 3. watershed management and effectiveness of total maximum daily loads, 4. PCBs in surface water sediments and impacts of dredging, 5. treating PCB contaminated surface water sediments, 6. Hg contaminated surface waters and sources, 7. treating Hg contaminated surface waters and sediments, 8. Hg methylation in surface waters, and 9. potential impacts of the 2 to 3 million tons of chromite ore processing residue used as fill throughout NJ.
